A staple for Bangladeshi households, rice feeds around
135 million people in the country every day. Bangladesh is the fourth-largest rice producer in the world, having harvested nearly
25 million tonnes of it in 2018.
Bangladesh consists of low, flat, fertile land with an abundance of rivers flowing through it. This makes the soil suitable for paddy fields that account for 80% of the total irrigated land in the country. The crop grows across three main seasons – Aus (July – August), Aman (November- December), Boro (April- May). Nearly 81 varieties of rice are harvested during these seasons.
We receive about
two-thirds of our total daily calorie supply and around
one-half of total daily protein intake from rice itself. Aside from providing nutrition to our people, rice also has a vital role in the livelihood of the people of Bangladesh, accounting for
48% of rural employment and providing income to
13 million farm families in the nation.

- The average Bangladeshi consumes 367.2 grams of rice every day.
- Over half our daily protein intake (approximately 29.73 grams) is from rice
(the RDA for protein is 56 g for an average 70 kg Bangladeshi individual).
- We get 2.87 milligrams of thiamine (vitamin B1) from rice intake only – far above the global average.
- The most popular rice varieties are 2 Boro varieties – BRRI Dhan 28 and BRRI Dhan 29. This is available as Atop rice on our site.
- Rice production has grown much faster than the growth of our population since 1971, thanks to the adoption of modern rice varieties.
Chaldal, in partnership with donor organizations, is sourcing fine and fragrant rice varieties from southern Bangladesh to help local farmers enter the e-commerce market and cater to urban consumers. At the same time, we are hoping to disseminate information on the types of rice available in our very own country to our valuable customers.
